Guten Appetit! 德国美食巡礼(一)

I remember the horns in the “com-pah” band playing traditional German waltzes and polkas. I was sitting at a long table with hundreds of other people at the Oktoberfest in Munich. We all had very large glass mugs of foamy beer in front of us. Every few minutes, someone would call out “Prost!” and the mugs would be raised.

Along with1 the beer, we snacked on hot pretzels with mustard. Or, we tried the specialty called “stecklerfisch”---- grilled fish on a stick. There were also plates of radishes, Bavarian ham, and hearty whole-grain bread. On one of the plates was the pork knuckle. With crispy skin and tender, juicy meat, it was a mouth-watering dish.

Certain specialties, such as sauerkraut and bratwurst, are known worldwide as German foods. Sauerkraut is green cabbage mixed with coarse2 salt that is allowed to ferment. This gives it a distinctive3 sour flavor and makes it easy to digest.4 Bratwurst is a special white sausage, made with pork and veal. And that is just one ---- there are over 1,500 varieties5 of sausage in Germany!
