European Union officials say Turkey has make a new offer over Cyprus to try to avert EU leaders from partially suspending Turkey’s talks on joining the EU at the summit next week. Officials from Finland which holds the EU presidency said Turkey had offered to open one port and one airport to trade from Cyprus which Ankara does not recognize. From Brussels our Europe correspondent Tim Franks has more.
In European Union terms, this is a last-ditch offer. When last year Turkey began linking negotiations on its eventual membership with the EU, it was given a year to open up its ports and airports to Cyprus. So far the Turkish government has refused to allow in Greek Cypriot ships and planes. But now according to an EU official, the Turks have said that they will open one port and one airport. The official pointed out the problems remain, Turkey had been told to open all of its ports and airports. And it’s not clear what conditions the Turkish government is attaching in terms of demanding that the EU increases its links to Turkish Northern Cyprus.
