本片纪录的是在南极大陆上生活的帝企鹅的生存和繁衍的故事。影片展示了帝企鹅这个滑稽、可爱而又坚强的物种怎样与严酷的自然环境和它们的天敌作斗争，怎样对小企鹅倾注它们的爱，从而完成他们的生命延续之旅。
在南极洲地冻天寒的冬天，企鹅对生活环境的选择十分有限：一边是北部，这里有广阔的海洋，相对温暖的生存环境，充足的食物来源；一边是南部，寒冷终年、冰雪覆盖，但环境相对稳定。为了使刚出生的小企鹅不受气候突变所带来的危险，帝企鹅只有离开安逸的北部踏上长达几百公里、危险的旅程前往寒冷的南部，在那里产卵，孵卵，直到春回大地。这一切只为了物种的繁衍。这种看起来柔弱笨拙、容易受伤的动物，在从北部前往南部繁殖的九个月的旅程中表现出了顽强的生命力。
影片展现了几千年来荒无人烟的南极大陆内部，一群动物的勇气，抗争，爱情，具有震撼人心的力量。
