Regarding the subject of English, I believe that there are various methods of learning it well. One method might be suitable for some people but not for others. The most productive way to learn English, I believe, is to discover a method that is effective to the learners themselves.
As to how I learn English, I have not taken any extraordinary shortcuts. From experience, I have the following tips to offer, which could be helpful to those who are still searching for a personally effective learning method.
The imitation of accurate pronunciation is one method that I discovered useful. It is best to first select a clear record of a native English speaker. The quality and speed of the speaker are important as they set an example for the learners and hence directly affect their pronunciation of the language. Having selected a proper record, one should then imitate aloud. One thing to remember is not to read too much at a time. One sentence per day is enough.
A practical way to widen vocabulary is to use small cards, on the two sides of which are the incomprehensible words and their respective meaning. The learners should then make use of the cards by revising them at regular intervals. Not only are the cards of great help to memorizing, they can also make the learners have a good command of English vocabulary, which in turn makes the learning of the language more fruitful.
A language can be basically regarded as one facet of a culture, therefore thorough understanding and accurate recognition of a culture are also helpful in language learning. Only by putting in mind the customs of a people, could one know how to make suitable greetings in its language. Only by knowing a nation’s history, could one gain an accurate command of its idioms and sayings. Only by objectively judging a society could one be a successful speaker of its language. Thus, a very good way to learn English is to thoroughly understand the culture of the English-speaking countries.
