Alan and Jeanna are friends meeting at a juice bar in their office building:
A: What’s up, Jeanna? You look like you’re about to pop a blood vessel.
J: Really? Good, then maybe I’ll get sick leave and finally catch up on some sleep. I’ve barely slept or eaten for days.
A: Those are warning signs of occupational stress. How are things at work?
J: Terrible. After all the layoffs lately, the workload is totally overwhelming for everyone that’s left. So I spend every waking moment in the office, dealing with my two-faced co-workers and capricious boss.
A: Maybe your boss just doesn’t have a clue about how much you’re really doing. Keep her updated on your achievements and projects. Also, insist that she prioritize everything so you can manage your time better.
J: I suppose that would help me regain some sense of control. But I’m afraid she’ll take that as a sign of laziness and give me the ax.
A: So take the initiative and hit the job-hunting trail now. You’ll be stunned at how many opportunities are out there.
J: That’s encouraging. Meanwhile, what about my idiot colleagues?
A: Taking a short walk always helps me cool down. And you probably shouldn’t call them “idiots” when they’re standing right behind you.
