HOST: Hello, I'm Russell Woodgates with the VOA News Now Opinion Roundup!
MD OPINION ROUNDUP THEME -- I&U
Once again, Palestinian terrorists have disrupted the Middle East Peace Process, this time forcing a delay in President George Bush's plans to announce a major endorsement of some kind of "provisional" Palestinian state. In an unusually-strongly-worded editorial, the New York Times accuses what it calls "delusional young Palestinians" who, it believes, are upsetting the world's efforts to end nearly two years of Palestinian-Israeli bloodshed:
VOICE Right now...the biggest threat to the Palestinians' national movement comes not from Israel but from within their own society. For months, Palestinians have grown intoxicated with the idea of power through death. They are exalting the most vicious acts of their own young. ... This is a severe failure of Palestinian leadership. ... Each side in this struggle is now locked into a position in which it sees any concession as rewarding the misbehavior of the other. Only the United States can affect this stalemate.
Given the policy vacuum, the Israelis have taken the initiative...re-occupying some Palestinian terrorist strongholds while erecting a sort of Berlin Wall between some Palestinian districts and nearby Jewish settlements vulnerable to attacks. The Chicago Tribune fears the fence will only provoke more Palestinian resentment....unless Israel modifies its plans:
VOICE To move in the right direction, the fence will have to be part of a program that combines carrots with sticks, a program that gives the Palestinians reason to hope that at the end of the day they will have their state. An essential element of that program is the relocation of some settlers.
Meanwhile, a Thursday editorial in the the semi-official Jordan Times of Amman says the Bush Administration shouldn't be set back by this week's suicide bombings and go ahead with its public pitch for Palestinian statehood...only with full sovereignty:
VOICE What is needed is a well-defined road map to the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state on Palestinian national soil within a clear time frame. No other viable option exists for reviving the peace process and relaunching a meaningful process towards conflict resolution. Hence is the absurdity of suggestions for setting up a provincial Palestinian state. It is incomprehensible why any peace plan would be predicated on a premise doomed to failure.
