Singer/songwriter/guitarist Tracy Byrd was part of a movement
of contemporary country performers trying to move away from the trend toward
pop/country and back towards the more traditional sounds of the genre; his popularity
seemed to show that many fans had similar feelings. He began his career in Beaumont,
Texas, in a rather odd way -- he sang "Your Cheatin' Heart" in a shopping mall
"recording studio," and the saleswoman was impressed enough to invite him to
perform in a monthly amateur talent show. His success there inspired him to
pursue music, working his solo act at night and doing odd jobs during the day.
He got a job playing with Mark Chesnutt at a nightclub in Beaumont. After Chesnutt
became a success and hit the road, Byrd formed a new group, Only Way to Fly,
which became the club's house band. He went to Nashville nearly a year later,
but the trip wasn't successful. On his return trip, he was showcased, and did
a successful solo audition for MCA executives Bruce Hinton and Tony Brown. The
first single from his self-titled debut, "That's the Thing About a Memory,"
made it to the charts as a minor hit in 1992. The next single, "Someone to Give
My Love To," made the Top 50, but the third single, "Holdin' Heaven," climbed
all the way to number one in 1993. Byrd released his Jerry Crutchfield-produced
second album, No Ordinary Man, in 1994, which featured the two collaborating
on the title track and "Redneck Roses." The single "Lifestyles of the Not So
Rich and Famous" made the Top 20. Love Lessons, Byrd's third album, was released
in 1995, followed later that year by Keeper of the Stars. In 1996, he returned
with Big Love, resurfacing again in 1998 with I'm From the Country. Signing
with RCA, he issued It's About Time in 1999. ~ Sandra Brennan
