Like the man in the State of Qi who feared the sky would fall on his head
杞人忧天
Qin(3)Ren(2)You(1)Tian(1)
In the State of Qi during the Zhou Dynasty (11th century - 221B.C.), there
was a man who worried all the time the sky might fall and the earth collapse.
Mostly, he vexed where to shelter in the event of the calamity. Nothing
could persuade him to stop worrying.
"Take it easy," one man said to him. "The sky is only air,
and you breathe that all your life. Why worry about the sky falling on
your head when obviously that isn't going to happen?"
"You're right that that the sky is nothing but air," replied
the man. "But what about the sun, moon and stars? Can't they fall
too?"
"Listen. The sun, the moon and the stars are really all just so much
more hot air. The only difference is they happen to shine," said
the adviser.
Hearing this, the worrying man was greatly relieved.
Later, this phrase was adopted to describe a person's unnecessary anxiety.
