Rowing Around Shaoxing
Shaoxing is just south of the Yangtze River, where the scenery is picturesque
throughout the year. The best time to visit Shaoxing is in spring, summer
and autumn. Every year around early-April, the China Lanting Calligraphy
Festival (中国兰亭书法节) is held in Shaoxing. Calligraphers from all over the
world gather in Orchid Pavilion, hold calligraphy symposiums, and write
calligraphy. Shaoxing also holds an annual China Shaoxing Wupeng Boat
Travel Festival (中国绍兴乌篷船旅游节).
There are several methods to get onto one of the ubiquitous wupeng boats.
The Luzhen Yacht Company (鲁镇游船公司) at Jishan Park (稽山园) on Huancheng Nan
Lu (环城南路, (0575) 861 1527) offers two types of wupengs for hire at 30
yuan and 50 yuan. The boats depart at 9:30am, 2:30pm and 7:30pm. The East
Lake Wupeng (东湖乌篷船) in the East Lake Resort (东湖风景区) also offers wupeng
rides. Entry to the resort is 25 yuan and hiring a wupeng is 60 yuan for
up to three in a boat. The resort is open 7:30am-5pm.
Airport - Xiaoshan Airport is 40 kilometers from the city. It takes about
an hour to get to the airport by shuttle bus from opposite the Dynasty
Hotel on Shengli Lu (0575) 513 5301 (胜利路王朝大酒店门口). Shuttle buses depart
hourly 8:30am-5:30pm. T
