One of the biggest surprises for first-time visitors to the Swiss capital, Bern, is usually the sight of heads bobbing in the Aare river which runs through the city. Swimming in the Aare, which reaches about 19°C if you're lucky, is a favourite pastime of people living here. It is indeed an amazing feeling to let the current pull you along as you gaze up at the parliament buildings for a short moment before remembering to concentrate on not missing the last exit back to the public Marzili swimming baths.
